my friend tricked me into trafficking drug - South African-based Nigerian

A shocked South African-based Nigerian has told officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency he was implicated by his friend after parcels of drug that tested positive to methamphetamine were found in his luggage.

Abiodun Banjo, 45, was arrested during the outward screening of passengers on a South African Airline flight to South Africa.

PremiumTimes reports the parcels of drug weighed 3.435 kilogrammes with a street value of N31 million in Nigeria.

The suspect, a graduate of Technical College, Ijebu-Ode, and hails from Osun State said the bags were given to him by a friend in South Africa.

"My friend in South Africa called me that his brother will give me two bags containing foodstuff to take to him," said Mr. Banjo, who said he works in Pretoria and had been living in the country since 2012.

"He also promised to give me $2,000. I opened the bags and checked thoroughly but could not find anything criminal that was how I accepted to take the bags but I was surprised when the drug was detected under the bags.
"I feel very sad that my friend has implicated me."

Ahmadu Garba, NDLEA Commander at the Abuja airport, said the drug was detected during a routine check on the passengers.

"Two bags belonging to one Abiodun Israel Banjo, 45 years old, were found to contain parcels of methamphetamine," said Mr. Garba.

"Inside the bags were food ingredients and clothes but underneath was a thin parcel of narcotics carefully concealed. He was immediately arrested and investigation is on-going."

Muhammad Abdallah, Chairman of NDLEA, called on members of the public to be aware of tricks employed by drug trafficking cartels.

"Drug traffickers recruit mules by enticing them with money," said Mr. Abdallah, a retired colonel.

"They are very clever in concealing drugs as drugs have been detected in bags, electronics, foodstuff and clothes among others.

"We strongly advise that all passengers should endeavour to pack their bags themselves and avoid taking bags for others."

The NDLEA boss said ignorance is no excuse in drug trafficking and the suspect shall be charged for unlawful exportation of narcotics.

"A person shall be deemed to have exported a narcotic drug or psychotropic substance under this NDLEA Act; if he brings to or deposits the narcotic drug or psychotropic substance concerned at any time at any customs area such as airports, customs port or any other customs point generally."

Some bystanders watched with amazement to this shameless act and  couldn't help but call the attention of the police after the pair caused a traffic jam. The policemen reportedly pleaded with her to remove the leash so that normalcy could be returned to road users.

''Some Rich Nigerians Live On Bank Loans' - Emir Muhammed Sanusi

Just so you know that not all that glitter is gold,  some of these rich people you look up to are in great debt and very prone to suicide

The Emir of Kano, Muhammed Sanusi II, has condemn some Nigerians who showcase wealth , saying some of them live on loans from banks.

Sanusi, who took to his twitter handle, said, "There are supposedly rich Nigerians who have everything about them financed by bank debts."

The tweet reads, "Look at sovereign debt fueling growth. If you take the example of an individual. You happen to know bank MDs and you can make a few phone calls and get loans. You borrow N1 billion here today and build a very nice mansion in Abuja. You borrow another N1 billion and let your family go out on first class ticket as you are travelling all over the world. You borrow another N5 to N6 billion and buy a private jet. We have very many people in Nigeria who you think are very rich. But, who are really bankrupt, because everything about them are being financed by bank debts.

"When one debt matures they have enough connections to call another bank, borrow and refinance that debt. They are not earning anything.

"They have private jets. They have yachts. Their families travel first class. They go abroad and stay in the most expensive hotels. It happens. And it is happening today.

"What do you think of those people? When you think about such people, do you think they are foolish people? Or do you think they are wise people? So, what would you say of a country that does this? So, you feel growth by borrowing money, pay salaries, people spend money on pure consumption spending, nothing is produced. It's fine.

It's short term. But, it is not sustainable. How much can you continue to borrow and consume without producing?"

ASUU Ready To Commence Warning Strike On October 2

This is one of the very odd things about This country,  the fact that our educational sector is always having to strike every year for something that the government can easily settle once and for all,  this is not good I must admit.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) said on Monday that it would commence a warning strike on Oct. 2.

A statement signed by Mr Ben Ugheoke, the Chairman, University of Abuja chapter of ASUU, stated that the Federal Government had failed to embark on meaningful dialogue with the union.

"We have tried to dialogue with the Federal Government but they have been playing games with us; we will start with a warning strike to show them we are not jokers.
"ASUU has being trying to get the attention of the Federal Government to intervene in the academic system of universities across Nigeria but it has all been abortive.

"Consequently, ASUU will give a warning strike which will start on Oct. 2nd.
"The strike will last for one week, and if they do not give us listening ears, we will start the indefinite strike in November,''Ugheoke said in the statement.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that ASUU, had at a recent news briefing accused the Federal Government of reneging on the 2009 agreement with the union.

ASUU's Coordinator, Abuja Zone, Dr Theophilus Lagi, also said in the statement that the government had only implemented 30 per cent of the provisions of Universities Needs Assessment document.
He said that the fund was disbursed indiscriminately to university councils as a fall out of the six months industrial action the union embarked upon in 2009.
Lagi urged the Federal Government to fully implement the 2009 agreement it reached with the union in order to avert another industrial action by the nation's public universities.

"The struggle to implement the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement is not about the union; it is not about the personal benefits of the members only.
"The current issues in contention include funding of universities for revitalisation in line with the Memorandum of Understanding the Federal Government and ASUU had signed in 2013.

"Re-negotiation of the FGN/ASUU 2009 agreement ASUU believes will reposition the entire education sector.

"We also demand the facilitation of the registration of the Nigerian Universities Pension Management Company (NUPEMCO), among other issues in the FG/ASUU 2009 agreement,'' he said. (NAN)
